"A century of crime and punishment in the back streets. Arson and Arsenic, torsos in Trunks and gore galore"

Brighton has been called the murder capital of England. This walk explores North Laine, nowadays a trendy area of unusual shops, cafes and bars. In the past things could not be more different, it was one of the poorest and most degraded areas of Brighton in the last century. Explore the backstreets with Glenda, a former resident in the 1970s when two murders took place round the corner from her home. Hear also about the case of the poisoned chocolates, see where skeletons were found in central Brighton, and where one soldier shot another. Brighton became notorious in the 1930s for its trunk murders, when two trunks were found to contain bodies in incidents not linked with each other. These and many other cases are explored in detail, with newspaper reports, as we go to the relevant sites and through some alleys you would not like to explore on your own after dark!

This topic is also available as a talk.
